Yujie Zhou (they/them) is a visual artist based in Helsinki, Finland. Working across photography, Jacquard weaving, installation, video, and printed matter, they employ strategies of decoding, translation, and illegibility to enable fragmented, concealed, and erased histories and collective memories to persist. Drawing on the tension between their nationalist upbringing and systems of control, Zhou investigates how images, language, and collective memory are shaped under conditions of censorship and political power. During the residency in Amsterdam, I will continue developing Health Hammer, an ongoing project that transforms everyday massage tools into portable monuments for collective remembrance and care. I will expand the project through photographic, archival, and material research, exploring how suppressed histories can be translated into healing instruments and activated through bodily gestures such as carrying, tapping, touching, and passing from one body to another. During the workshop participants will learn how to make plant-based developers powered by the photoreactive properties of plants and kitchen waste, and will be introduced to the material history of photography and the basics of ecological thinking. Students will test the developers made during the workshop developing photograms where they will assemble plants, their bodies and personal objects in the darkroom to construct images of the local territory in which artificial and natural bodies meet and coexist on the photographic surface. Materials (provided by the darkroom): - Possibility to boil two pots on a stove (e.g. a portable electric stove and two pots)- Vitamin C powder- Soda crystals- Photographic paper (new and/or expired, both are fine)- Vinegar- Coarse salt- Water- Darkroom thermometer- I am planning to teach students to make a saline solution instead of using industrial fix,but prints should stay in the saline solution for 24-72 hours. Tudor Rhys Etchells is a visual artist who uses the photograph to challenge fictions created by legal systems. Working within such a bureaucracy in his previous role as a human rights lawyer inspires his closeness to the document and brutally mundane. Documentary photography is a medium that often fails, so parodying it as a system of constructing truth, he questions the norm of the imagined nation state. Michaela Nagyidaiová is a Slovak visual artist based in Vienna. Her work explores the connection between landscape and memory, the transformation of Central and Eastern European environments, migration, and questions of roots. For centuries, woodlands in Slovakia have been shaped by the rhythms of the natural world, by the traditions and rituals of people who lived among them, and by the weight of shifting empires, wars, and political systems. As part of the FUTURES Residency, we are excited to welcome Eleni Onasoglou to the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center (Budapest), where she is developing her project “The Silence of the Beasts.” Eleni’s work explores memory, the constructed and fractured past, and the fragile relationship between humans and the natural world. Description Please join us for a FUTURES x Magnum Artist Spotlight with Parisa Aminolahi. Paris Aminolahi will present her first photo-book, How the Nights Can Fly, published by Huwawabooks. How the Nights Can Fly (formerly Tehran Diary) is a long-term photographic project by Parisa Aminolahi, tracing the intimate life of her mother across Tehran and temporary reunions with her children living abroad. Begun in 2012, the work reflects on distance, migration, aging, and the quiet weight of filial love shaped by the Iranian diaspora following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Photographed on 35mm black-and-white film and later intervened with acrylic paint on Fuji Crystal Archive Paper Supreme, the images form a hybrid language between photography and painting. The painted gestures transform everyday moments into surreal, tactile spaces, echoing both the emotional distance between mother and child and the artist’s attempt to hold on to presence across continents. Over time, the project became a deeply personal and therapeutic process, with the artist’s mother emerging as both subject and muse. Following her mother’s passing in 2022, the work gained a new resonance, shifting from documentation toward memory, absence, and care. The dummy was developed under the guidance of Corinne Noordenbos and has since evolved through a new edit, concept, and title in collaboration and under the guidance of designer and publisher Roï Saade. The book is envisioned to be published by Huwawabooks, Saade’s newly founded publishing house. “Metamorphosis” arrives in Turin at EXPOSED Torino Photo Festival after traveling to Prague and Rouen. Exploring metamorphosis as a personal, social, and environmental process, the group exhibition brings together diverse visual languages that reflect the tensions shaping our time. From 9 April to 2 June, the exhibition will be presented across six independent spaces in Turin (Italy), fostering connections between the city’s cultural venues and emerging visual artists. Mirielle Rohr is a visual artist and photographer based between Paris and Berlin. Through analogue photography, ceramics, sculpture, and AI-generated imagery, she examines the aesthetics and emotional economies of digital culture, how bodies, desire, and identity are mediated, performed, and consumed. Mirielle Rohr is a Carte Blanche Étudiante laureate and she presented her work at Paris Photo Fair in 2025. Please join us for a FUTURES x Magnum Artist Spotlight with Marcus Gustafsson. Marcus Gustafsson will present his first photo-book, Filling the Gaps, published by Kultbooks. In his debut book Gustafsson explores a deeply personal and complex narrative about his father’s alcoholism and its impact on himself and his family. The project reconciles fragmented memories to better understand the circumstances that have shaped his life and relationships, while also serving as an effort toward healing and reconnecting with his fractured family. It confronts the duality of growing up with an alcoholic parent—the struggle to break free while remaining bound by a shared history—and the void left behind when the family’s unifying figure is gone. The work examines how addiction alters family dynamics, leaves lasting marks, and challenges the possibility of moving forward. In Filling in the Gaps, Marcus combines his own images with archival family photographs. His visual language is raw yet stylized, documenting his father’s daily life and surroundings while also turning the camera toward himself, reflecting the tension between reality and memory. Altered family photos—taped or drawn over—become acts of reclamation, as he infuses inherited memories with his own voice. Filling in the Gaps is an emotional exploration of trauma, showing how revisiting painful memories can open paths toward reconciliation and peace with the past. FUTURES & Magnum Photos invite you to join us for our next online Artist Spotlight with Vika Eksta. Eksta’s practice is rooted in the exploration of self-portraits as a method of researching specific themes and creating works that resonate with a wider community. In this presentation, she will focus on her recent project The Encounter, an attempt to reconstruct the physical and emotional experience of childbirth through photographic self-portraits and video materials captured during the process. She will also address the challenges of exhibiting such intimate work and the ways it has been received by the public. To provide context for this approach, Eksta will start her talk by reflecting on her earlier self-portrait projects, particularly Dievs Daba Darbs (God Nature Toil). The project examines rural depopulation, using an abandoned house and what it contains as props to tell the wider story. This project was published as a photobook in 2018. ‍ About Vika Eksta: Vika Eksta (1987) is an artist and educator based in Riga, Latvia.Her work primarily focuses on autobiographical narrative and existential subjects, as well as research of Eastern European life and reflections of historical trauma. Join us for a talk and workshop with Michał Sita & Anna Pilawska-Sita, presenting their research The Ontologies of Space – Case Studies of Jeju. "Recently, thanks to an invitation from the Jeju Museum of Art, we've been working together in South Korea, exploring the tensions embedded in the landscape of Jeju island. Our first focus point was on military structures from the Japanese colonial period—bunkers built deep into volcanic hills. While the surrounding environment may seem largely untouched, these bunkers continue to subtly transform it, bending it to the logic of warfare. Hills become networks of fortresses; forests turn into camouflage. The ecosystem itself becomes part of the military infrastructure, just like the concrete walls and underground corridors. This idea—that architecture acts as a device reshaping what a landscape is and can be—was at the core of the work we presented at the Jeju Biennale last year. We examined the lingering power and impact of postcolonial architecture. In 2025, we had another opportunity to work in Jeju, focusing on another kind of transformation: the tensions between nature and golf infrastructure, which is widespread across the island. We asked ourselves: what happens to "nature" when it’s shaped by the logic of large-scale country club developments? Alongside our artistic work, we also conducted a curatorial survey, researching the practices of artists engaged with nature–landscape relationships in Jeju. The process provided us with an understanding of the artistic practices in Jeju that seek to identify the norms guiding usage of space and nature, or propose subversive strategies for defining and acting upon the natural environment. The open studio will provide us with an opportunity to test the way we revisited the materials we've gathered. Sometimes, a simple shift in perspective or in how we engage with our surroundings is enough for a landscape to take on new meanings, aligned with a parallel logic. This is precisely how artists working in recent years on the Korean island of Jeju have attempted to rethink their relationship with space — observing it from peripheral positions — through the lens of palm trees, weeds, or historically charged sites of violence. Such exercises in situated awareness have allowed hidden tensions in the relationships between humans, the environment, and the history of a place to surface. We, too, followed this path. We observed how the operation of golf courses on Jeju affects the nature and landscape. Golf has the ability to subject vast areas to the rules of the game, its aesthetics, and the logic of movement characteristic of the sport. But what practical consequences arise from a shift in how we understand space, if we begin to define it according to the rules of golf? What, for example, will happen to the Futures Hub space if we subordinate it to the logic of a golf ball? The enigmatic guests at Lia Darjes’ banquet seem straight out of a fairy tale. Plates I-XXXI is a silent series in vivid colours that unveils the magic of an unexpected reality. Squirrels, tits, slugs, field mice, ants, sparrows: these are some of the small animals that become the protagonists of Lia Darjes’ mysterious tale. Far from frightening, they captivate and charm with their furtive spirit. Plates I-XXXI is a silent, colourful series that lifts the veil to reveal that unexpected visitors and magical parallel worlds are closer than we think. He will present his research on New Documentary Strategies, developed during his residency in Amsterdam in July. "Over the last decade, in Italy several experts have interpreted emerging practices in the Italian context as experiences close to the notions of post and metaphotography. However, there has been little attention given to more recent and innovative studies such as Speculative Documentary (Bellinck & van Dienderen, 2019) or New Documentary Strategies (Hamilton, 2021), both active in Northern Europe. These approaches emphasize the aesthetic, political, social, and technological specificities of the medium. The exhibiton Metamorphosis opens on October 4 at the Holešovice Market, Hall 13, in Prague. The exhibition presents eight artistic approaches that explore how social structures, modes of perception, and memory evolve over time. The presented projects address urgent political and social issues of today – from the impact of conflicts across the Eurasian continent to ecological and introspective themes. They interweave myth, both collective and personal memory, and shifting narratives that influence our ability to understand the past and navigate the present. The exhibiting artists explore how identity is formed between reality and fiction, between individual story and broader societal framework. Ksenia Ivanova, Benedetta Casagrande, Vitalii Halanzha, Emilia Martin, Anna Orłowska, Yana Wernicke, Viktoriia Tymonova and Balázs Turós differ in visual language and initial context, but are united by their sensitivity to liminal and transitional situations. Their works depict the world as a space of constant change. The selection of projects was prepared by curators Emese Mucsi (Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center, Budapest), Raphaëlle Stopin (Centre photographique Rouen Normandie, France) and Světlana Malina (Fotograf Zone, Czech Republic). The exhibition Ties that Bind opens on October 4 at the Holešovice Market, Hall 11A, in Prague, the last destination after Zagreb and Porto. The exhibition explores the shifting forms of relationality, belonging, and closeness. Through the works of Dev Dhunsi, Sasha Chaika, Ihar Hancharuk, Donja Nasseri and Sheung Yiu, it examines the ways in which traditional notions of family, identity, and social structures can be re-evaluated and reshaped. Rather than fixed categories, it offers space for open-ended, often contradictory or temporary forms of bonds that form between people, places, and species. The presented works navigate between personal experience and broader cultural and political contexts. Language, the body, memory, and imagination are presented through photography, installation, text, and performative elements as means of creating bonds as well as disrupting them.The exhibition thus raises questions about what new forms of closeness we can envision and whether it is possible to form relationships beyond established frameworks or at least momentarily challenge these boundaries. This year the FUTURES Annual Event will be hosted by Fotograf Zone in Prague. Artists and international curators will meet from 3 to 5 October in the frame of the Fotograf Zone Festival, within an inspiring and dynamic environment. The three-day program will include the opening of two exhibitions to the general public: Metamorphosis, showcasing for the first time the projects by the FUTURES artists selected for this year annual theme, and Ties That Bind, whose journey comes to and end in Prague, after travelling to Porto and Zagreb. Both exhibitions have been curated by Světlana Malina and are part of the Fotograf Zone Festival 2025 with the topic TALK TOGETHER. Over the course of the event, FUTURES artists will have the opportunity to take part in dedicated workshops focusing on building narratives, the role of titles and annotations, and the relationship between photography and algorithms, as well as portfolio reviews with international experts, feedback sessions and networking moments. ‍ The Annual Event is exclusively for FUTURES artists. FUTURES & Magnum Photos invite you to join us for our next online Artist Spotlight with Sheung Yiu. ‍ For this talk, Sheung Yiu will present his ongoing project (Inter)Faces of Predictions, or How To Read a Face. Across Eastern and Western cultures, societies have developed ways to predict a person’s character through facial features. In East Asian cultures, the esoteric practice of face-reading promises the power to see into one’s future through facial analysis. Though face reading remains largely a folk belief, many continue to seek the occult power of predictions from face readers. In the West, the forgotten pseudo-science of physiognomy, combined with statistics and machine learning, re-enters our modern lives as facial recognition algorithms, perpetuating societal biases and individual prejudices. In this project, Sheung Yiu blends the visual language of the occult in face reading with the “scientific” aesthetic of facial recognition to blur the lines between these practices from the East and West. This visual study reveals the similarities between the two predictive regimes centered around the face: one remains folklore, while the other is extensively applied to almost every aspect of our daily lives. The project challenges the automation bias of facial recognition (or what he calls “Western face reading”) and unveils the deeper, often unexamined belief system underlying these practices. Leonardo Angelucci and Sabrina Cerea will present their project From Nowhere. As part of the FUTURES & MPB Residency, From Nowhere explores the act of seeing in the age of automation, using an autonomous agent to navigate satellite imagery and virtual maps, registering traces of space and presence through algorithmic vision. Paying tribute to On Kawara, the project reimagines mapping as a detached and procedural act. What emerges is a continuous performance across virtual territories: systematic, impersonal, and subtly poetic. ‍ The event will include a workshop exploring the intersection of design, technology, and artificial intelligence, highlighting how creative reappropriation can extend the possibilities of interactive systems. Bobby Shuk Pui Yu will present her ongoing project Curses, Human-faced Fish, Sadako Yamamura, which explores how folklore and visual culture materialize collective fears and societal anxieties through the transmission of curses.Inspired by two iconic Asian narratives—the Taiwanese legend of the human-faced fish and Sadako Yamamura from Japan’s Ring—her project examines how fear spreads through storytelling and visual media, shaping behaviors around self-preservation. As part of the FUTURES & MPB Residency, Bobby continued researching and developing her forthcoming solo exhibition at Fotografiens Hus (October 2025), investigating how traditional folklore evolves in contemporary contexts. ‍ The event will include a workshop on Nightmare Sharing & Amulet Making ‍We will explore how our nightmares can hold hidden messages or subconscious “curses” that shape our fears and desires. Together, we will share personal dream experiences in a safe and supportive space, transforming them into protective amulets (護身符). Using materials like fabric, stuffing, or bed sheets, each participant will create a comforting object that symbolises courage and healing. Join us on June 25 for the FUTURES x Magnum Artist Spotlight featuring Rebecca Topakian. ‍ Rebecca Topakian is a French-Armenian artist living between Paris region and Yerevan. After studying philosophy and geography, she turned to photography and graduated from the ENSP Arles in 2015. She is interested in defining identity through its invisible, mythological, and fictional dimensions.For this talk, Topakian will present her photobook Dame Gulizar and Other Love Stories.Her starting point for the project is the unique story of her Armenian family, who lived in Turkey before her grandfather emigrated to France. This story is about the love of her great-grandparents – Garabed and Gulizar.Topakian explored this part of her identity by choosing fiction and mythology. Bearing the love story of her ancestors in mind while she traveled and lived in Armenia, desire became the thread of this project: it is a desire for earth, ground, identity, but also for the other’s body acting almost as a mirror. Join the Open Studio at ISSP in Riga! Julius Thissen will speak about their multidisciplinary artistic practice, how they developed their current project “Bones of Graphene, Skin of Kevlar”, and the research on trans community rights that they conducted during the residency at ISSP in May 2025.

The exhibition Ties That Bind, featuring Ihar Hancharuk, Sasha Chaika, Angyvir Padilla, Jan Durina, Dev Dhunsi, Sheung Yiu and Donja Nasseri, will be showcased in Porto starting from May 15. Focused on the 2024 FUTURES annual theme, Ties That Bind explores and challenges the networks of interdependence linking social, natural, and scientific structures. Join us on Tuesday 6 May for an online presentation by Matt Black of his long term project American Geography. ‍ Between 2014 and 2020, Matt Black traveled from his hometown in California's Central Valley to hundreds of other communities across the United States. Concentrating on cities, towns, and counties with poverty rates above 20%, he discovered that he could travel from coast to coast without ever crossing above the poverty line. His exploration of this stark American reality grew to cover over 100,000 miles and 46 states, spread across five cross-country trips. In a 2016 article titled “Economic growth in the United States: A tale of two countries,” economists Emmanuel Saez, Thomas Piketty, and Gabriel Zucman state, “Our data show that the bottom half of the income distribution in the United States has been completely shut off from economic growth since the 1970s. It’s a tale of two countries. For the 117 million U.S. adults in the bottom half of the income distribution, growth has been non-existent for a generation while at the top of the ladder it has been extraordinarily strong.” With his project American Geography, Matt Black chose to focus on one of these two countries. For six years, starting in 2014, traveling by bus and by car across the US, he explored “the geography of poverty” – photographing an America and American lives that to him were the rule, not the exception. On Tuesday 1 April for an online presentation of Olivia Arthur’s latest book published by VOID: Murmurings of the Skin. The book looks at both human and machine, not in contrast with each other, but melded together into one lyrical examination of the body. From page to page, we see depictions of people and robots through gentle black-and-white portraits, images of natural and artificial body parts in close examination, moments of stillness, and moments of movement. For the making of the book, Arthur’s process was slow and purposeful. Changing her approach to work in 5×4, she was obliged to set up her box camera and tripod for each image, ducking underneath the dark sheet each time to get the shot. Working in large format is a slow, intimate, and deliberate process, one that obliges photographer and subject to really spend time with each other, and one in which the person being photographed knows what is going on. “You don’t grab a picture, you really work on it together, and I found it felt very honest to me,” In this session, Olivia will specifically talk about this project and the making of the book. Raisan Hameed (*1991) is an Iraqi-German multimedia artist based in Leipzig. He joined FUTURES in 2023, nominated by Der Grief.During this talk, he will present his latest body of work Pixels of Memories, an attempt to address the disappearance of institutional and personal archives in the war-torn city of Mosul by re-constructing them using Google maps. Hameed’s work is a reflection on the construction of an Iraqi identity and reveals how political conflicts shape landscapes and people. In Amsterdam’s parks and along its canals, certain trees bear silent testimony to centuries of global exchange. Many arrived as seeds or saplings through colonial trade routes, reflecting an era when botanical exploration and economic ambition shaped Europe’s landscapes. She is the associate editor of the award winning book Shining Lights. Black women Photographers in 1980’s-90’s Britain (MACK/Autograph ABP, 2024). She joined LCC (UAL) as an Associate Lecturer in January 2023. ‍ Sonia Jeunet: Sonia Jeunet is the Education Director at Magnum Photos in London. In this role, she curates educational programs and leads strategic partnerships to shape the agency’s vision for education. Sonia has collaborated with some of the most respected professionals, institutions, and photographers in the industry. Sonia has 15 years experience working in the photography industry. Prior to Magnum, she held key positions at Panos Pictures in London and NOOR in Amsterdam, as commissioning editor, photo editor and project manager. Through a multimedia and non-linear approach, she investigates obstetric and gynecological violence—a form of abuse that has remained hidden for a long time and continues to be largely ignored. FUTURES and Fotogalleriet are pleased to announce the launch of the new publication Ties That Bind – Fictions, Orthodoxies and Interdependencies. Through new and translated fiction, poetry, essays and commissioned visual essays, Ties That Bind is an anthology that rethinks attachment and social power relations within family, state, friendship, identities and communities through passion, intoxication, exhaustion, desire, devotion, aid and intimacy in private and public spheres. Using a decentralised editorial method based on distributed agency, young artists in the FUTURES photography network were invited to suggest untranslated poetry and prose in any language that responded to these overarching questions of codependency and reciprocity. A final selection was then edited by former director of Fotogalleriet Antonio Cataldo and artist and FUTURES nominee Nikhil Vettukattil, combined with six new photographic commissions by FUTURES artists. “Reciprocity, this book intends to point out, also speaks about toxic relations and the need to rethink the world and its inherent unconscious (as well as undisguised) subordinations if we want to be part of determining structural change. With this volume, our aim is to show the full spectrum of feelings, including perhaps the most “unruly” ones, that arise from imaginative— and unconscious—processes that are not always directed by logic and rationality. Rather, such effects are guided by principles like association, distraction, and wandering—getting lost in the page, the images, the words. We wanted to restore power to involuntary processes guided by conversations that do not always need to lead to an elsewhere other than critical reflection. We looked at forms of exchange, translation, and sharing as ways of gathering that are often connected to discourse as well as physical encounter. FUTURES and FOTODOK are proud to announce Fierce Togetherness – Kinship, Gender, and Photography, a three-day conference taking shape as a FUTURES Meet-Up at Utrecht running from 1-3 November 2024. This event focuses on kinship, exploring possible forms of interconnectedness between actors in the local cultural scene.Many of our guest participants strive to transform oppressive social structures and seek ways to reclaim space for those who identify as women, trans, non-binary, or gender nonconforming. The program introduces various strategies for this essential reclamation, from protest and celebration to sharing food and challenging institutions. A highlight of the program is the launch of the exhibition ENERGY: Redistributing Power and Taming Consumption on October 31, 2024. On October 31 2024, FUTURES and FOTODOK launch ENERGY: Redistributing Power and Taming Consumption. This exhibition explores the ecological, socio-political, economic, and humanitarian energy crises that both human beings and non-human entities face today. But at the same time it reminds us that energy is seen – somewhat paradoxically – as the power we require to bring change to the world. It serves as a catalyst for vitality, creativity and strength. It brings people together, making us socially active and able to help one another, as well as allowing us to react to ecological and social and political emergencies. The exhibition shows a diversity of approaches to the subject in the projects of the eight selected artists.Yana Kononova (Ukraine) talks about the destructive forces of energy in warfare, Tanja Engelberts (the Netherlands) examines the pitfalls of extractivism. Hiền Hoàng (Vietnam and Germany) reflects on healing and Yana Wernicke (Germany) advocates for unity across different species. ENERGY: Redistributing Power and Taming Consumption is a group exhibition, an anthology of diverse photographic projects focusing on energy, one of the most relevant and complex topics today, and one which everybody has to deal with either as a private or as a public matter. From personal stories to documentary and social approaches, to the exploration of the limits of photography as a medium seeking new forms of narration, each photo series and multi-media installations lined up in the ENERGY: Redistributing Power and Taming Consumption exhibition could stand on its own as a case study, providing a condensed representation of the ideas associated with this multilayered topic. While some projects talk about the destructive forces of energy in warfare or in extractivist society (Tanja Engelberts; Yana Kononova), others explore existing strategies as possible solutions (Dávid Biró; Umberto Diecinove; Antonio Guerra), exemplify desirable companionships (Yana Wernicke) and reflect on healing (Hien Hoang). We are pleased to invite you to the opening The Institute for Scene Experiments by visual artist Nikhil Vettukattil which will take place on 03 October at 17:00 at the Futures Hub in Amsterdam. The Institute for Scene Experiments is a parafictional institution devoted to the investigation, production and dissemination of scenes. In residence through FUTURES X MPB, the ISE will assemble a group of performers and technicians to analyse, deconstruct and reconstitute elements of cinematic scenes for camera, exploring alternative modes of staging narratives, framing, sound, and light. ISE aims to reflect on the film crew as a social form, engaging in the generativity and potentialities of scenes independent of plot, development and conclusivity, through formal techniques as well as collective authorship, ‘open rehearsal’ and collective editing. Some of the raw materials produced during the residency will be made publicly available for viewers to re-edit. A variety of game strategies are implemented in the process to examine both what is being filmed and the structures behind it. The exhibition Ties That Bind, open until November 3, presents the work of seven artists, focused on this year’s theme, which aims to “to challenge, untie, and move beyond familial ties. It explores new, meaningful ways to belong, connect, and experience closeness. It imagines new forms of attachment and kinship that could exist beyond familiar social structures, relationships, and species...or grow from within their loopholes.” It challenges and raises “questions, including those that are mischievous, fun, and dissident. Join us on Saturday August 31st for the collective open studio celebrating the conclusion of the summer residency UNFOLDING FUTURES. During two months, four emerging photographers have been in residency at FUTURES Hub, exploring contemporary photographic formats and installation displays. Their studios have become a generative space for experimentation and research during their creative processes. In this final event, the four photographers will share a collective installation at the studio space, including additional works activating the building of FUTURES Photography Hub. The event will include a presentation talk in which we will reflect together with the public on their experiences during the residency, the importance of the creative process and the experimentation with the photographic medium. Daniel Zduniuk, Must Be Eaten "Must be Eaten", an ongoing project, questions the accessibility of contemporary art institutions to the public via a disruptive element: the silverfish. Because its diet is based mainly on paper, the silverfish is seen as an undesirable creature eager to eat paper: to eat art. Alia Leonardi, Moi, a girl “Moi, a girl” showcases the interplay of semantics and imagery on social media, in doing so highlighting the platforms’ transformative power in shaping contemporary gender expressions. This project seeks to explore gender performativity within digital and meme culture. The girls online fight against scrutinisation, can online identity and the aesthetic of the “coquette/silly girls” in fact be seen as as strategy against gender norms and societal expectations? Despite the capitalist nature of social media, there is potential for feminist discourses and resistance to organise on such platforms against patriarchal structures. What if endless doomscrolling was an act of resistance? Drawing on the “Theory of the Young Girl” by Tiqqun, cyberfeminism and postmodernist frameworks are used to reappropriate an identity constructed by consumerist culture and the male gaze. The girls of the internet act as subversive figures, with the idea that if the space exists, it should be taken over or transformed. In this subversive exploration, stereotypically feminine craft techniques like embroidery and textiles are employed to emphasise the engagement of the work. Joseph Kennel, I Stood at the Foot of a Mountain 485 million years ago sediments from unnamed volcanic eruptions slowly settled on the hillsides of unnamed mountains. Compressed over millions of years, these sediments combined, forming blueish-gray stones, stones that now constitute slate, a defining feature of the landscape and culture of North Wales. The inactive Dinorwic slate quarry and the peak of Yr Wyddfa, the highest peak in the UK lies only a few kilometers from each other. Both exist today as important sites of tourist attraction, yet they carry distinctive visual archives and human marks that uniquely historicize each space in the present. ‘I Stood at the Foot of a Mountain’ looks at the material histories of slate as a connection point to consider the temporal and spatial realities that exist within both locations. Reconstitutions through time of the slate into culturally mediated forms, operational devices, and a post industrial landscape marks and breaks the stones’ slow lifecycle. Noticing the collision of temporalities held within the materiality of this space, allows us to step out of one temporality into another, to reflect on the projected image of one on another. With the collaboration of FUTURES member FOTODOK, the event will give you an insider's view into the photobook-making process with artist-in-residence Yana Kononova and book designer João Linneu. Over an intensive period of collaboration and creative exchange – beginning on May 20th – Linneu, Kononova, and FOTODOK’s curator Daria Tuminas will work together on editing and designing Kononova’s first photobook, to be co-published by FOTODOK and XYZ Books. The publication aims to bring together works from Kononova’s ongoing "Radiations of War" project, which delves into the profound repercussions of warfare in the context of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Plus, enjoy homemade Ukrainian snacks by Amsterdam-based artist Alex Blanco, who will serve a selection of homemade Ukrainian snacks, drawing on her recent photobook "Meat, Fish & Aubergine Caviar." The project, which Blanco will introduce, is an intimate story reflecting on both Ukrainian and Odesan culture through the prism of food and family. Blanco’s passion lies in creating emotionally charged, cinematic images that resonate with her personal memories. Her Meat, Fish & Aubergine Caviar project was awarded the 2023 Nobuyoshi Araki MA-g Awards for Photography, in the Original Photography Series category. João Linneu is a Brazilian-born designer based in Reykjavík, Iceland. With over 20 years experience in communication, Linneu has garnered international acclaim for his innovative approach to design. He has held roles of Art Director, Head of Art and Creative Director in São Paulo and London, whilst his work has been honoured by prestigious design awards including D&AD,Cannes Lions, One Show and Clio. A co-founder of Void, an Athens-based independent publishing house focused on photography, Linneu’s portfolio includes over 200 publications. Today, Linneu designs books for publishing houses worldwide through his award-winning studio Kakkalakki, co-founded with his wife Fernanda Fajardo. Yana Kononova was born on Pirallahi island in the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan. During the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, her family moved to Ukraine, where she first immersed herself in photography. Graduating from the Photoschool of Viktor Marushchenko, she further honed her skills through a photography course organised by the Image Threads Collective (USA). With a background in social science, Kononova holds a PhD in Sociology. Her artistic talent has been recognised by awards such as the 2019 Bird in Flight Prize in Emerging Photography and the 2022 Hariban Award, whilst her works have featured in both exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad. She was included in FOTODOK’s 2023 exhibition Whispers and Shouts: Voices of Ukrainian Women Photographers, where her work contributed to a collective narrative on the effects of war and displacement. ‍ ‍

We are pleased to invite you to the exhibition Metamorphosis by visual artist Claudia Fuggetti which will take place on 16 May at 17:00 at the Futures Hub in Amsterdam. Metamorphosis reflects the current historical period: a phase of transition and change that has an impact not only on humanity but also on the natural world. Inspired by the ecological philosopher David Abram, this project encourages viewers to re-imagine nature as a living entity. The colour interventions within the photographs symbolise the life that persists in harsh environmental conditions. The exhibition aims to promote a communal experience of how we perceive nature and climate change through an immersive exhibition and contemplative space. The artist will also present new works created during the FUTURES X MPB residency. It is the time of the year for FUTURES Conversations! These are a series of professional meetings between FUTURES selected artists and professionals in the photography field. Curators, artists, editors, gallerists, publishers, and writers will be there to discuss what FUTURES artists need to know from them: advice for a project, research suggestions, business orientation, writing skills, grants application advice, etc. The conversations take place every year online and offline during the annual event.

Every year, FUTURES members nominate a group of artists to join the platform. Coming from different parts of Europe and with a diverse background, these talents will be part of a long-term programme with many opportunities to develop their projects and career. By bringing together a wealth of resources and curatorial expertise, each talent selected by the members gains access to an unprecedented network of professionals, markets and audiences. Being selected within Futures is a proof of quality of the artists and increases their commercial opportunities. ‍

She graduated from Lodz Film School in Poland and Institute of Creative Photography in the Czech Republic. In the summer of 2019, she opened her own museum in home village in Poland. At the Futures Hub, Alexey Shlyk will present his ongoing research, 'Space Topologies,' alongside the premiere of his latest installation, "GOO" (2023-2024). In the aftermath of the rigged elections in Belarus in 2020 and the ongoing war in Ukraine, Alexey found himself consumed by the news, particularly through the lens of pro-governmental media in Belarus and Russia. The ceaseless stream of hatred, disinformation, and falsehoods infiltrated his personal space, transforming his daily routine into a habit of relentless doomscrolling. Overwhelmed by the stark simplicity and brutality of propaganda methods, Alexey discovered himself immersed in a viscous space of lies, political slogans, and manipulated visuals. In his creative work, Shlyk explores personal and political subjects, memory, technology, and ingenuity. Through large-scale photographic installations, he investigates the relationship between image and space, employing photography, video, and sound. In 2017, Shlyk was the winner of ArtContest in Belgium, received the LensCulture Emerging Talents Award, was a laureate of Carte Blanche Paris Photo, and was shortlisted for Prix Levallois. In 2018, he won the Prijs Roger De Conynck in Belgium and a Public Prize at the ING Unseen Talent Award. In 2020, together with Ben Van den Berghe, he received COVID-19 work grant from FOMU Antwerp and SOFAM grant in 2022. He has had solo exhibitions in Belgium, Norway, China, Belarus, and Russia, and has participated in numerous group shows and photo festivals in Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Greece, Spain, Germany, France, Cambodia, among others. His work has been published in the British Journal of Photography, GEO Germany, De Standaard, Corriere della Sera, Néon France, Fisheye, and Artpress. ‍ ‍

The third FUTURES Meet-Up in 2023 will be organised and hosted by our member FOMU Fotomuseum in Antwerp. During the event FOMU will launch the new FUTURES annual publication.

In the context of the Club to Club Festival, FUTURES collaborates with EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival and design studio Unstated to curate a multidisciplinary project that blends photography, music, and installation. EXPOSED PRELUDE, one of the teaser events of EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival, is part of this exciting collaboration. On Sunday, November 5th, at the OGR venue, which will host the closing day of C2C, we will present a real-time installation on three LED screens. This installation will utilize AI and a dataset featuring images of FUTURES artists. The visuals will dynamically transform in response to the music played by the DJs during the event. From September 22 to October 22, 2023, we are delighted to present Dear Moment, I Keep U for Later, the second exhibition for the FUTURES hub's opening month, featuring the work of Swiss artist Nicolas Polli. Witness the evolution of his nearly finished exhibition, which he will continue to develop over the weeks following its opening, as Nicolas resides within the exhibition space. This promises to be an innovative and multilayered experience that you won't want to miss. "At Futures, I will have a month, with a chance of showing already to the public my work after a few days from my arrival. I need to be prepared, I need to work on an exhibition that can exist as an evolutionary practice. I want to work on the idea of dexterity and layering.I will print some of my images in different sizes, and start using them in the space. My work regularly plays between the commercial creation of images together with the reflection around waste or what is considered as such.I would like the experience in Amsterdam to be a chance to focus on space and materiality. Showcasing an immerging world for a public outside Switzerland and not used to seeing what I create. I want people to come several times and try to experience something new each time.I would like to create new images, working with the local culture and focusing on representing realities around me. Working with markets, buying, photographing, and consuming local products. I would like to understand the habits of a fast city like Amsterdam, how do people consume? how do people waste? What attitude is behind reusing things?I will also do performances around food, showcasing photography that will then find a place on plates that are going to be served to people, between a tasteful reality immersed in a visual one. "The body is daily transporting a human, a murmur in the quiet. Humming systems hidden underneath what provides protection. Inextricably linked to what makes us us. What does it mean to be human and to have a body available? Formed and entwined with the systems of technology. Looking for differences, similarities and imperfections between computer and mortal, I take on different shapes, roles and materials." ‍ Noah van de Wetering (b. 1999) Noah van de Wetering, Zwolle, the Netherlands, 1999, currently lives and works in Utrecht, the Netherlands. In his work, Noah van de Wetering analyses the creative process in experimental approaches toward image-making and reading. His entry points are often photographic techniques, which have led him to question the use of communication. Abstraction is therefore used to counter the figurative and communicative nature of photography. Besides all the image reading, there are words scattered around the bodies, words of critical reflection as well as nonsensical sentences. This year's Copenhagen Photo Festival will take place from June 1st to 11th, 2023, with the theme of Rewilding. As a part of the festival, FUTURES meet-up will be held during the first two days of the event, June 1 and 2, 2023. It is a unique opportunity to participate in lectures, screenings, panel discussions, portfolio reviews, and other activities related to contemporary photography. We are happy to announce that our FUTURES ANNUAL PUBLICATION edited, curated, designed and produced entirely by our member VOID, will be released in March 2023.The theme of the publication is in line with the annual event and will be 'On the verge'.

This years FUTURES annual event of will be hosted by CAMERA in Turin. Coinciding with the Turin Contemporary Art Week, from 4 to 6 November, one hundred artists, twenty curators and heads of major international contemporary photography institutions will be guests at CAMERA.

On the Verge is the new exhibition opening at CAMERA in its Project Room from 4 November 2022 to 8 January 2023. It features a group show investigating the major themes of our time, comprising over 70 works produced by seven young photographers selected from the FUTURES Photography network.

After a year of comings and goings and uncertainties, the current reality is anything but balanced. Waves of counter narratives continue to flourish and subvert our knowledge base, altering all the parameters that marked the sense of being and belonging.

Thanks to a partnership with five independent spaces around Turin, in Italy, Eleonora Agostini, Matteo de Mayda, Leonardo Magrelli, Giulia Parlato and Silvia Rosi will be able to showcase their work from the end of November through until mid-March 2022.

“When Icarus fell, it was spring” is the main event of the 12th edition of the Tbilisi Photo Festival. The exhibition combines the works of 77 American, European, and Georgian photographers into a nine-screen video installation.

The Futures Conversations is an exclusive event in which we invite a group of professionals in the field of photography and our Futures artists for a series of portfolio review and coaching sessions.

Launching the 12th edition of the Tbilisi Photo Festival, a group of Futures artists selected by the festival will be showcased on an online screening on 30 September, at 9.30PM (GMT+4).

On Thursday 16 and Friday 17 September, artists and member organisations part of the Futures platform and guests from various fields will participate in panel discussions.

The Futures artists nominated by PHotoESPAÑA in 2021 is being presented in a collective exhibition within the festival’s main programme in Madrid. The show brings together works from five talents until 14 November at the Círculo de Bellas Artes.

Eleven Futures artists will explore the festival's main theme in a hybrid exhibition, showcasing their work at Melkweg Expo and in an online environment, activated by QRcodes.

On Thursday, 15 July, at 7pm (CEST), CAMERA – Centro Italiano per la Fotografia will present the artists selected for Futures this year. The meeting is part of the appointments of the cycle ‘Hotel Panorama. Una nuova generazione italiana’.

Under the theme ‘Bite the hand that feeds you’, the PhotoIreland Festival 2021 will take place from 1 to 31 July with exhibitions in Dublin, Ireland. As it was in 2020, the festival will also organize a programme with online activities, including talks and a critical online cooking channel.

Every year FOMU selects ten promising phototographers, all living or working in Belgium. In addition to a variety of networking opportunities, FOMU will accompany them on a development journey to create the portfolio magazine .tiff, culminating in a group exhibition.

Special edition of Fotofestiwal calls for a one of a kind Portfolio Review. After the successful virtual debut last year, Fotofestiwal Lodz is coming back to the live formula in 2021. If you would like to participate and introduce your work to our reviewers, submit until the 26th of May.

The Fotofestiwal Lodz is celebrating its jubilee this year from 10 to 27 June in Lodz, Poland. In this edition, the program includes over 40 exhibitions throughout the city and presentations of 150 artists and their projects.

The festival is now showcasing the five artists they selected for Futures this year in an exhibition at Refshaleøen in Copenhagen, from June 3 to 13. The show is an integral part of the festival’s programme.

During The Assembly, our Futures members organize a series of talks with art professionals in topics related to the main theme RESET. The assemblies take place online, via Zoom and streamed on our social media channels.

The Conversations is a private event in which we invite a group of professionals and our talents for a series of portfolio review and coaching sessions.

In The Expos, we present our talents in two online exhibitions. Hosted by Fotomat and curated by Salvatore Vitale, the expo RESET investigates our main theme with the projects by seven artists from our platform.

The Open Mic is also a private activity, when our talents can present their ongoing projects in an online space with artists and other professionals from the industry.

The Studio Visit programme is an online activity organized by Futures and curated by Marina Paulenka. Once a week, Paulenka presents a virtual online tour of our talents' studios, talking about their inspirations, creative process, and ongoing projects.

Since 2012, FOMU has been selecting ten of the very best of the up-and-coming image makers of Belgium every year for the .tiff magazine, which has since grown into an international platform.

The Futures Talents nominated by PHotoESPAÑA this year will be presented in a collective exhibition within the festival’s main programme in Madrid. Curated by Ana Berruguete, the show will bring together works from five emerging artist from September 17th to November 22th.

From November 7th to 10th, the 23rd edition of the Paris Photo brings to the Grand Palais a big programme dedicated to professionals, collectors and enthusiasts. Some of our Futures talents will take part of the event in exhibitions, talks, and book launches

The Triennial of Photography Hamburg presents their five Futures Photography Talents of 2019 this Friday, July 12th, during the Sommernacht der Fotografie.

During one month this summer, FOMU will show recent work by the following artists selected for .tiff 2019: Elena Aya Bundurakis, Bertrand Cavalier, Jeroen De Wandel, Ulla Deventer, Lionel Jusseret, Léonard Pongo, Maroussia Prignot & Valerio Alvarez, Titus Simoens, Egon Van Herreweghe & Ann Vincent.

The final 5 Dutch talents are Eline Benjaminsen, Eva Kreuger, Kevin Osepa, Pleun Gremmen, Verena Blok. They will be launched and presented to the audience on Thursday Sept 20th in Amsterdam in a public talk.

The Budapest Portfolio Review event will be organized for the third time between April 12 and 13, 2019. The consultants are recognized representatives of the Hungarian and international photography profession.

The focus of the coaching sessions will be themes such as giving tools for promoting talents' career, how to deal with an institution such as a museum, how to develop the concept of a project and the relationships of an author with the outer realms like curators and institutions
