Residency Overview and Theme

The FUTURES Residency Program provides selected emerging photographers with the time, space, and resources to develop new work, with a strong focus on the artistic process and research. Each residency creates an environment for experimentation, exploration, and production, offering participants the opportunity to push the boundaries of their practice while engaging with critical contemporary themes.

The residency invites artists to explore the intersection of Nature, Environment, and Technology, topics that are increasingly urgent in contemporary life. We encourage projects that engage deeply with these themes, challenging our perceptions of human and ecological relationships, technological advancements, and environmental responsibility. Through this residency, artists will have the chance to investigate, reflect on, and expand upon these concepts in an interdisciplinary and culturally vibrant setting.

The program emphasizes the creative journey, supporting residents as they research, experiment, and develop their ideas. Public engagement is a key component of the residency, with each program concluding in a public event where participants share their work and engage in dialogue with diverse audiences.

Engagement Opportunities

During the residency, artists are encouraged to engage with the FUTURES platform and wider audience through:

• Visual Diary: Weekly updates shared via FUTURES social platforms to document the creative process and give audiences an inside look.
• Video Portrait: A video capturing the artist’s journey and practice will be produced during the residency to be shared on FUTURES’ channels.
• Public Event: A public event and presentation will take place at the end of the residency and will be live-streamed to engage international audiences. Each artist is expected to contribute—whether through an open studio, workshop, exhibition, or similar format.
• Interview: A local writer will conduct an interview about your creative process during the residency. This written interview will be featured on the FUTURES website, offering further insight into your work and artistic journey.

90% presence during the residency is mandatory.

Location and Space Details

Futures Hub | Amsterdam:

Located at the heart of Amsterdam, the FUTURES Hub serves as the global headquarters for all FUTURES activities and a dynamic cultural focal point for the city. Situated in a repurposed industrial site, this newly opened space provides residents and visitors with access to a versatile environment designed for artistic experimentation, exhibitions, and public engagement.

The Hub combines work and living areas with access to an adjacent atrium for larger installations, performances, and presentations. It features a ground-floor studio of 60 square meters, equipped with heating, electricity, and a private entrance. The functional living/workspace includes a double folding bed, private bathroom, washing machine, and a small kitchen. A sliding door separates the work and living areas, ensuring flexibility and comfort.

Residents also enjoy thoughtful amenities such as bed linens, towels, access to a shared atrium for large-scale works or gatherings, and a communal rooftop terrace, perfect for relaxation or informal meetings.

ISSP | Riga:

The resident will be housed at the ISSP Riga Residency apartment in the city centre, shared with other 2 artists. The accommodation offers comfortable conditions for living and working - a separate bedroom with a working space, spacious shared living room and a fully equipped kitchen.                                                                    

The resident will have access to ISSP office facilities including use of printer, scanner, ISSP photography library and studio lights.

Capa Center | Budapest:

Capa Center’s residency program offers all entering participants a fully furnished private room within a communal apartment located on the Art Quarter Budapest premises, a studio space catering to the project’s requirements within its 400 m2 shared studio in the coolest postindustrial area of Budapest. Capa Center provides varied services to integrate the residents into the local art scene and contribute in establishing professional connections that best support their work and career. In addition to providing studio space, the residency will also offer the possibility to organise a presentation at the Capa Centre in downtown Budapest, and use of the Capa Centre's office facilities, including the printer and scanner.

Practical Information and Financial Support

Stipend:
Residents receive a stipend of €1,000 to cover living expenses, materials, and travel costs.

Accommodation:
Accommodation is provided by the residency.

Travel and Visa Assistance:
Residents are responsible for obtaining travel documents, though support will be provided for artists needing assistance with visa applications.

Health, Travel, and Liability Insurance:
Residents are required to arrange their own health, travel, and liability insurance for the duration of their stay. FUTURES, ISSP, and Capa Center are not liable for any personal injury, loss, or damage to personal property during the residency period. Artists must ensure they have appropriate coverage in place before arriving at their residency.

Submit your application via the online form. Please ensure all questions are answered, and provide links to your online portfolio and website, as incomplete applications will not be considered.

Results:
All applications will be reviewed by a panel of experts in the field of photography.
