Julie Poly launches photobook inspired by characters from train rides in Ukraine

The artist Julie Poly, nominated as a Futures talent by The Calvert Journal in 2019, just launched the photobook Ukrzaliznytsia. The book is based on her 2-year project about travelling in Ukrainian trains. The book includes documentary photographs of train decorations and staged photographs of models representing typical passengers of the Ukrainian railway.

Julie Poly has involved an international team of art talents to make the book. Its art director is a British publisher Ben Ditto while its designer is Marcus Watkinson. The book’s editor is a Ukrainian artist Misha Buksha. The distributor is Antenne Books based in the UK, which specializes in promotion of independently published projects.

Julie Poly (real name Yulia Polyashchenko) was born in Stakhanov, Lugansk area, and is now based in Kyiv. Inspired by Boris Mikhailov’s projects and her education at Kharkiv School of Photography, she took her first pictures at the horse market in Kharkiv. Today, Julie Poly is one of the most successful Ukrainian fashion photographers.
