FUTURES is proud to announce its participation in Unseen 2024, the art fair that stands at the forefront of contemporary photography.
FUTURES will participate with a full programme, not only will we present three selected artists at the booth for the first time, but we will also be actively involved in the Unseen VIP Programme. In addition, we will also present our summer residency on a special wall and host an artist talk in the Meijburg Lounge during the fair.
In our booth, we’ll feature three renowned FUTURES artists from this year’s residency at the FUTURES Hub in Amsterdam:
- Karolina Wojtas: A Polish photographer recognized internationally, with awards including the C/O Berlin Award (2022) and ING Unseen Talent Award (2019).
- Alexey Shlyk: a Belarusian artist based in Antwerp, Shlyk has exhibited globally and won the Public Prize at the ING Unseen Talent Award (2018).
- Claudia Fuggetti: an Italian visual artist with exhibitions at venues like Les Rencontres de la Photographie Arles (FR), Copenhagen Photo Festival (DK), and Giovane Fotografia Italiana (IT).
In collaboration with Het Parool and Unseen, FUTURES will offer special editions by these three artists. These prints can be ordered directly at unseenamsterdam.com/parool.
All artists participated in the research-driven FUTURES residency at the FUTURES Hub in Amsterdam, which fosters experimentation and innovation. The program encourages artists to explore the intersections of photography and installation while creating new frameworks to support emerging artists in their careers.
In addition to showcasing these talented photographers, FUTURES will also highlight the work of four recent graduates from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK), who participated in the UNFOLDING FUTURES residency at the FUTURES Hub this summer. Projects by Alia Leonardi, Joseph Kennel, Daniel Zduniuk, and Benjamin Morrison will be displayed on the Wall at Unseen, curated by Nuria Bofarull, offering a glimpse into the innovative approaches of the next generation of photographic artists.
The program at Unseen will also feature a special artist talk by Nikhil Vettukattil on Friday, September 20th at 17:00. Vettukattil is currently in residence at the FUTURES Hub as part of the second edition of the FUTURES X MPB residency program. An Oslo-based artist, Vettukattil works with a variety of media, including sound, installations, performance, text, sculpture, and video, exploring representation and image-making in relation to lived experiences. As part of the residency, Vettukattil founded the fictional 'Institute for Scene Experiments,' where they collaborate with performers and technicians to analyse, deconstruct, and reimagine cinematic scenes, exploring new ways of storytelling, framing, sound, and light. MPB, the largest global platform to buy, sell, and trade used photo and video equipment, has played a crucial role in supporting the FUTURES residency program.
FUTURES’ presence at Unseen 2024 underscores its commitment to creating valuable networks and providing opportunities for emerging artists to develop their career. Through its residency programs and innovative collaborations, FUTURES continues to support the evolution of contemporary photography.
