Lives and Works in
Paris and Vienna
Eric Asamoah (*1999) is an Austrian photographer of Ghanaian heritage whose practice positions portraiture as a critical space for examining identity, memory and diasporic experience. His work is characterized by a restrained and contemplative visual language, favoring nuance, stillness and emotional clarity over overt narrative or spectacle. Working predominantly with natural light and deliberate composition, Asamoah creates images that emphasize presence and interiority, allowing subjects to inhabit the frame with quiet authority. His photographs often explore themes of selfhood, masculinity, vulnerability and belonging, informed by transnational perspectives and lived experience within the diaspora. His practice operates through attentiveness and ambiguity, using photography as a mode of inquiry into how individuals are seen and how they choose to be represented. Situated within a new generation of contemporary image-makers, Asamoah’s work contributes to ongoing conversations around authorship, visibility and the evolving language of portraiture within current photographic discourse.

Here, Nowhere Else
In "Here, Nowhere Else" Eric Asamoah articulates a portrait practice rooted in stillness, attentiveness and the politics of presence. His images unfold at the intersection of intimacy and distance, where the act of being photographed becomes a negotiated space rather than a fixed representation. Working with Ghanaian boxers from Jamestown – one of Accra’s oldest coastal districts, shaped by colonial history, migration and a long-standing boxing legacy – Asamoah approaches portraiture as a site of encounter, attentive to gesture, silence and the subtle choreography between photographer and sitter.
The boxing gyms of Jamestown function not simply as locations but as spaces of discipline, resilience and collective memory. Asamoah resists the spectacle commonly associated with boxing, instead focusing on moments of pause, rest and reflection. The boxers are presented neither as archetypes nor symbols, but as individuals held in states of vulnerability and resolve. Through restrained composition and natural light, the series foregrounds presence over performance, allowing the subjects to inhabit the frame with quiet authority. "Here, Nowhere Else" positions portraiture as an ethical and relational act, reflecting on how history, place and the body converge within the photographic encounter.
